Prunus cerasus (Rosaceae), called tart or sour cherry, is native to Europe and Southwest Asia and grows worldwide. Bright red to nearly black round fruit appear in spring. Tart cherry has many uses in tradition medicine and has been studied for its antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, antidiabetic, and antiarthritic properties, as well as for sleep improvement.
