New York Times Publishes Article "Why Dangerous Supplements Linger on Store Shelves"

Article recites much of a New England Journal of Medicine piece, subject of previous ABC advisory

(AUSTIN, Texas, April 30, 2014) The New York Times this morning published the article "Why Dangerous Supplements Linger on Store Shelves" by Anahad O'Connor.

The author appears to have picked up the thread of the New England Journal of Medicine article "Hazards of Hindsight" by Pieter A. Cohen, MD. Dr. Cohen's piece calls for pre-market approval of the safety of dietary or nutritional supplements and changes to the system of reporting adverse events related to supplements. The American Botanical Council issued a Member Advisory regarding Cohen's piece on April 2, 2014, available
here.

ABC is currently in the process of writing a letter to the editor of the New York Times to clarify some issues raised in O'Connor's article.
