CIMAP releases a new variety of chamomile flower

A new variety of chamomile flower with higher oil content was released by the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plant on Sunday

A new variety of chamomile flower with higher oil content was released by the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plant (CIMAP) on Sunday. The variety is expected to double the profits of farmers cultivating the flower for cosmetic as

well as pharmacological

consumption.

The new variety,Sammohak,was released on the first day of the ‘International Symposium on Current Status and Opportunities in Aromatic and Medicinal Plants’ organised by CIMAP.

Other than being used in the pharmaceutical industry to extract terpenoids and flavenoids used as anti-inflammatory,anti-bacterial and anti-allergenic components,chamomile flower also finds usage in the perfume industry.

“Cultivable in sodic soil,90 per cent of chamomile produce from in our country is exported. Primarily a winter crop,the dry chamomile flower is sold at Rs 100 per kilogram while its oil extracts are sold at Rs 25,000 per kilogram,” said Dr R K Lal,CIMAP scientist,who has been involved in the development of the new variety of

the flower.
