March Featured Book Excerpt

African Herbal Pharmacopoeia was written by the Association for African Medicinal Plants Standards (AAMPS), and published in 2010 by Graphic Press Ltd. Softcover; 324 pages. $125.00.

The 51 African medicinal plants discussed in African Herbal Pharmacopoeia were selected carefully from a collection of 120 nominated species based on their relevance, perceived value, safety, and sustainable collection/cultivation methods. The book’s up-to-date, inclusive monographs feature detailed commercial and phytochemical information, including a botanical description; information on nomenclature, chemistry, and ethnobotany; market data; regulatory status in multiple countries; distribution maps; quality control markers; safety data, color photos, and more.

The technical and analytical data on the plants are based on samples from across Africa, and are the combined efforts of the editors of African Herbal Pharmacopoeia and 31 additional leading African medicinal plant experts and scientists. The monograph on gum Arabic tree—featured in the excerpt below—provides information such as therapeutic uses as an anti-inflammatory and demulcent, as well as identification data, solubility, standard preparations, nature of plant material and products, and a list of relevant clinical trials.

An excerpt from African Herbal Pharmacopoeia, available here, features the book’s title page, table of contents, foreword, the “Centurion Declaration,” and a detailed monograph on gum Arabic tree (Acacia senegal).
