At the Council for
Responsible Nutrition’s annual meeting in Bernalillo,
New Mexico in September, CRN
Apple awards for 2008 were presented to Adrianne Bendich, PhD, the current
Clinical Director of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), and to Byron Johnson who oversees
regulation and compliance for Access Business Group (ABG). The awards were
given for the recipients’ continued contributions to the dietary supplement
community as well as their support for CRN. Both GSK and ABG are member organizations
of CRN, a leading trade association in the dietary supplement industry.1
Bendich said that she was
“thrilled, amazed and surprised” when she heard that she had won the award. She
said that there were so many outstanding people involved with CRN that she had
never considered herself to be among the recipients. She credits good fortune,
wonderful colleagues, passion for the potential in vitamins and minerals, and
knowing that her work can change the lives of people around the world as the
formula for her success (oral communication, November 10, 2008).
Bendich has been with GSK
for the past decade and has contributed to several books covering diet and
nutrition with a specific focus on women’s health and calcium. She has also
co-edited 11 books and is the series editor of the Nutrition and Health series
from Humana Press, which contains 28 published volumes so far. She hopes to
continue her support of CRN, continue to work on preventing osteoporosis and
improving gastrointestinal health with GSK as well as adding more volumes to
the Humana series.
Johnson was recently elected
the chair of the International Alliance of Dietary Supplement Associations
(IADSA).2 He has previously worked as chairman of CRN. He is currently the
vice-president and general council for Nutrilite, a company that is part of the
Access Business Group (also known as Amway), and is a member of CRN’s board of
directors.1
Also receiving recognition was
Marjorie Fine, the executive vice-president of Shaklee Corporation, who has
served for two years as CRN’s chairperson and will finish her term at the end
of 2008. She has been with Shaklee for two decades.1, 3
The ceremony was held in
Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico. The 2007 CRN Apple award winners were Randi
Neiner, PhD from Shaklee Corporation, Carolyn Sabatini of Pharmavite, and ABC’s
Founder and Executive Director Mark Blumenthal.4
