Register for ABC’s Peruvian Amazonia
and Andes Botanical Medicine Trip

Noted herbalists and authors Rosemary Gladstar, Mindy Green, and Steven Foster will lead this year’s “Botanical Medicines from the Amazon and Andes” ethnobotanical ecotour, occurring October 1-10. Co-sponsored each year by the American Botanical Council (ABC) and the Amazon Center for Education and Environmental Research (ACEER), this year’s ecotour will feature exciting workshops, sight-seeing opportunities, educational experiences, and much more.

“Exploring the beauty, the diversity, the similarities, and the differences inherent in every corner, as well as in every culture, of this wonderful little planet is one of the most direct ways I know to experience the fullness of life,” said Gladstar. “I’ve traveled to the deep Amazon and the high mountains of Peru in the late 80s and am very excited to be returning with my dear friends, Steven and Mindy, and with all of the new friends we’ll be traveling with and meeting along the way. If you’ve never been to a rainforest before, the plant rich diversity of the Amazon will blow your minds, and if you’ve been [to the Amazon before] you are, like me, I’m sure, longing to return.”

Participants will be able to visit local markets, hike across the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway (a series of suspended walkways 100 feet above the forest floor), examine medicinal plants at the Jardin de Plantas Medicinales, and explore the extraordinary ruins of palaces and temples at Machu Picchu. Various presentations and workshops throughout the tour will focus on the diversity of the area’s medicinal plants, the preparation and use of herbal remedies, conservation efforts, and other topics.

“As an herbalist with a great love of all things aromatic, I am thrilled to offer a class on fragrant and medicinal resins of South America,” said Green. “We will see many of these plants at the market places we visit and on the diverse herb walks we take, and all participants will receive some resin samples I will provide for the class. We will also learn from many wonderful indigenous healers along our journey, and classes are also scheduled with an experienced local shaman. It is an adventure not to be missed!”

“For the past 15 years, ABC has been sponsoring these trips to the Peruvian Amazon and Andes,” said ABC Founder and Executive Director Mark Blumenthal. “For many people, the trips have been one of the highlights of their lives, even considered by some a life-changing experience!”

The cost is $3,309 plus airfare to Lima. More information about the trip and how to register is available at the ABC website, here. A recent HerbalGram article by Steven Foster also provides further information about the tour’s itinerary and highlights.1
