December Featured Book Excerpt

The Pot Book: A Complete Guide to Cannabis is edited by Julie Holland, MD, and published in 2010 by Park Street Press, a division of Inner Traditions International. Softcover; 551 pages. $19.95.

The Pot Book takes an extensive look at marijuana's role in medicine, politics, science, and culture. Its content ranges from chapters on cannabis in ancient history to the medical risks and toxicology of marijuana to the role of pot in contemporary pain management. The book's 42 chapters, written by a variety of experts, are broken down by subject matter into 5 parts: "An Overview of Cannabis," "Risks of Use and Harm Reduction," "The Clinical Use of Cannabis," "Cannabis Culture," and "Steps in the Right Direction." Particularly enlightening segments include Chris Bennett's contribution concerning cannabis in early/ancient history (in which he makes an argument for the appearance of cannabis in the Bible), Ryan Vandrey and Margaret Haney's chapter on the "real" risk of addiction (which they cite as being about 9%), and Dr. Holland's interview with author Michael Pollan about marijuana and the importance of forgetting.

An excerpt of The Pot Book, available here, features the book's title page, table of contents, introduction, and a chapter on cannabinoids and psychiatry.

The book may be purchased on Inner Traditions' website.
