The Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm: The Cultivator’s Guide to Small-Scale Production was written by Peg Shafer and published in 2011 by Chelsea Green Publishing. 336 pages; paperback. $34.95.

Author Peg Schafer has been growing Asian herbs in her certified organic Chinese medicinal herb farm in Northern California for 15 years. Her years of experience led her to publish this full-color guide to growing quality Asian herbs in the United States. On her website, Schafer says, “We can relieve some of the pressure from the over-harvesting and elimination of nature's wild growing grounds by growing our own quality medicinals in our own gardens, farms, and fields.” The guide stresses sustainable methods of growing herbs and dedicates a chapter to conservation and global trade in medicinal plants. Other chapters cover the basics of domestic herb production from planting seeds to drying and storage. This guide offers practical information for beginner gardeners to advanced Chinese Medicine practitioners.

An excerpt from The Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm is available for HerbalEGram readers. It contains the book’s table of contents and Chapter 2, “Herb Quality.” The book can be purchased from the Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm’s website.
