Registration Deadline Fast Approaching for 2009
Botanical Medicine from the Amazon and Machu Picchu Tour

Register by June 29th to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Peruvian Amazon and Andes with noted herbalists and authors Rosemary Gladstar, Mindy Green, and Steven Foster. For the first time, these 3 highly respected herbal authors and teachers will travel and teach together on the annual ethnobotanical tour organized by the American Botanical Council (ABC), the ACEER Foundation (Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research), and West Chester University, which will take place October 1–10, 2009.

In the Amazon, Steven Foster and Peruvian shaman Antonio Montero Pisco will guide a tour of a local market abounding with medicinal herb stands and curanderos, who will discuss the preparation and use of traditional remedies. Foster will also lead an evening discussion on medicinal plant conservation. Further, Rosemary Gladstar will focus on first aid for travelers during her presentation “Traveler’s Joy: Staying Healthy on the Road,” and Mindy Green will discuss “Aromatic Resins of South America.” Additional lectures by the workshop leaders and local representatives will include: “Medicinal Plants of the Amazon,” “Plants of Economic and Health Value,” and “Amazonian Shamanic Traditions.” As always, the high point of this portion of the trip will be a visit to the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway – a series of 7 walkways suspended 100 feet above the forest floor that provide an unparalleled opportunity to study the rainforest and canopy life.

During the Andean portion of the tour, the group will tour local markets and medicinal plant gardens to learn about shamanic and healing traditions of the mountains. Ample time is allowed for group and individual exploration of Ollantaytambo and other sites in the Urubamba Valley (the Sacred Valley of the Incas) and Machu Picchu, voted as one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World.”1

The full itinerary can be viewed on the ABC Web site, along with an HerbalGram article by Steven Foster that discusses the upcoming trip. A total of 18 CME credits provide continuing medical education for physicians.

For additional information or questions, contact Mary Ann Robinson, ACEER program coordinator: MRobinson@WCUFoundation.org or visit ABC’s Web site to register.
