Marijuana, Gateway to Health: How Cannabis Protects Us from Cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease was written by Clint Werner and published in 2011 by Dachstar Press. 225 pages; paperback. $15.95.

In a time when more and more states are divided against the federal government on legalizing medical marijuana, Clint Werner presents a book that provides scientific insight into the plant’s effect on humans and society alike. In the introduction, Werner writes, “Ideally people will read this book, learn to talk about the data, begin conversations and work to eradicate the delusion that marijuana is a harmful substance of abuse that must be restricted by invading and brutalizing the lives of those who enjoy or need it.” The book is divided into 2 parts. Part One, “High Science,” explores the recently discovered endocannabinoid system, which involves cannabis-like compounds that naturally exist in the body. Part Two, which comprises roughly 2/3 of the book, traces the history of marijuana back 6,000 years. This section contains chapters that outline government resistance to the drug, the current marijuana renaissance, and—on a more serious note—a description of people who should not use cannabis.

An excerpt from Marijuana, Gateway to Health is available for HerbalEGram readers. It contains the book’s title page, table of contents, Chapter 1, “The Endocannabinoid System,” and Chapter 7, “From Sacred Plant to Evil Weed in Just 6,000 Years.” The book can be purchased from its website.
