Rodale's 21st-Century Herbal
This week's featured book is Rodale's 21st-Century Herbal: A Practical Guide for Healthy Living Using Nature's Most Powerful Plants written by Michael J. Balick, PhD, with a foreword by Andrew Weil, MD, published in 2014.

When an ethnobotanist writes an herbal, one is bound to get something special: so it is with ABC Board Member Michael Balick's latest book. Exploring the historic relationship between people and herbs and how it has evolved over time, Rodale's 21st-Century Herbal provides the ancient wisdom of more than 180 of the world's useful herbs and the modern science to support these uses. Encyclopedic in form, the book is organized into three sections: "The World of Herbs," covering global history, basics of herbal botany, and how and why herbs work the way they do; "Herbs to Know," including more than 180 herbs alphabetized by Latin binomial with instructions on how to grow and use them; and "Herbs for Life," detailing instructions on designing an herb garden, as well as using specific herbs and recipes for cleaning, scenting, cooking, and achieving better health, energy, and relaxation. Dr. Balick draws from more than 30 years of studying herbs and indigenous cultures around the world to provide the reader with an accessible guide to growing and using our plant allies. Hardcover, 498 pages.
