Interest in the use of black cohosh as a treatment for menopausal symptoms has been increasing steadily for many years. As interest increases, so does the potential for accidental or deliberate adulteration with low-cost Chinese species with similar names but different chemistry.

A recently published paper on black cohosh, “Exploring the Peripatetic Maze of Black Cohosh Adulteration,” by noted botanical medicine expert, author, and photographer Steven Foster, sheds light on confusing naming and identification, market economics, history of alleged liver toxicity possibly associated with the adulterants, and analytical tests available to ensure correct identity of black cohosh.

Join us for a fascinating discussion with Steven Foster and Mark Blumenthal of the American Botanical Council as we look in more detail at adulteration of black cohosh and what it means for consumers of herbal products.
