This week's featured book is Medicinal Spices: A Handbook of Culinary Herbs, Spices, Spice Mixtures and Their Essential Oils, by Eberhard Teuscher, with contribution from Ulrike Bauermann and Monica Werner, translated by Josef A. Brinckmann and Michael P. Lindenmaier, published in 2006.

The author of this book describes 300 plants and the spices that are derived from them.

The volume includes 84 monographs of culinary herbs with details of their cultivation, production, constituents, sensory properties, pharmacologic actions, potential toxicity, and culinary and medicinal uses. It also provides references, color photos, and an index. Hardcover, 459 pages.

Medicinal Plant Conservation Area Proposed at Pachamalai. The Hindu. Oct. 15, 2012. Officials of the State forest department have proposed to protect "Kannimar Shola," the nearly 200-hectare area rich in medicinal plant diversity and endangered plant species.

Indian Folk Medicinal Plant Has Mosquito-Repelling Compounds. The Indian Express. Nov. 6, 2012. Scientists at the US Department of Agriculture found that a plant used in India to keep bugs away contains mosquito-repelling compounds, which may be developed into effective insect repellents.

Herbal Medicine for Chlamydia Infection in Women Approved by SIPO. San Francisco Chronicle. Oct. 30, 2012. The State Intellectual Property Office of China has recently approved an herbal formula that is effective in treating chlamydia in women.
