American Botanical Council - 25 Years of Herbal Excellence

Friend of ABC,

The year is nearly over and I’d like to share some of my reflections on 2014 with you, for both ABC and for the herbal community.

2014 was a banner year in publishing at ABC. We produced more than 480 publications this year including our 500th issue of HerbClip, our critiques and summaries of clinical studies; our first US Tea Sales Report (by the way, US tea sales were up 5.9% in 2013); and some very well-received articles, including the incredibly popular Voynich Manuscript article exploring the mysteries of this 500-year-old never-before deciphered botanical manuscript.

At ABC, we expanded our international scope. We added 10 new international experts to the ABC Advisory Board (and we’re planning on adding more) and received endorsements for the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Program from both the International Alliance on Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA) and the world’s largest medicinal plant research group, the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural product Research (GA). Other international organizations and companies are also supporting and endorsing the Botanical Adulterants Program and ABC through membership and donations.

We also saw real progress on the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Program. Natural product chemist John Cardellina rejoined the Program, and we have Canadian herb and regulatory expert Michael Smith working on the Program, too, which means the Program will be picking up even more steam in 2015. And our first Laboratory Guidance Document on skullcap is about to be released. These helpful Laboratory Guidance Documents provide summaries and evaluations of existing analytical methods for determining authenticity and detection of adulteration of herbs already covered in the Botanical Adulterants Program.

2014 has been an interesting year for the herbal community in the United States as well. Dietary supplement sales rose 7.9% in the US in 2013, marking the 10th consecutive year of rising sales, and, as we’ve done for many years, we’ll be starting to compile statistics for 2014 sales in early 2015 for our annual Herb Market Report in HerbalGram.

At ABC, we take our role as a servant of the world’s herbal community very seriously. And, we’re deeply grateful to have your invaluable support. Without it, none of our many accomplishments would be possible.

So, IF you are in a position to provide an extra gift this holiday season, I respectfully invite you to please include ABC in your
year-end giving. It will be greatly appreciated!

ABC’s nonprofit educational efforts are truly unique and, we believe, essential to improving selfcare and healthcare around the globe. We hope you agree with us. I thank you for being a part of our mission!

Along with the ABC staff and Board of Trustees, I wish you a very healthy and happy Holiday Season!
