NPA: Study on Adulterated Supplements 'Reaffirms FDA’s Performance Failures Gaps'. WholeFoods Magazine. July 29, 2022. A recently published report in the Journal of the American Medical Association has concluded that the FDA's strategy of issuing warning letters has fallen short of being effective in deterring the sale of adulterated dietary supplements that represent a public health risk.

Proprietary Boswellia Serrata Extract May Shorten Duration of Acute Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Infections, Says Recent Study. Nutritional Outlook. July 28, 2022. Data from a new double-blind, placebo-controlled study have linked supplementation with a proprietary, lecithin-based Boswellia serrata extract with a reduction in symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea resulting from gastrointestinal infections.

Green Tea Extract Promotes Gut Health, Lowers Blood Sugar. Science Daily. July 26, 2022. A new research study has associated supplementation with green tea extract with a reduction in blood sugar and gut inflammation in subjects with metabolic syndrome in addition to healthy individuals — an observation credited to the anti-inflammatory properties of its catechin compounds.

Biden Administration ‘Exploring’ Psychedelics Task Force Ahead of Expected Federal Approval of Psilocybin and MDMA. Marijuana Moment! July 27, 2022. With the FDA's approval of psychedelics for prescription use anticipated within the next two years, policymakers are urging the Department of Health and Human Services to take the necessary steps to investigate the "proper use and deployment" of these therapies to combat the ongoing mental health crisis.

Hops Extract May Ease Knee Joint Pain, Help Sleep: RCT. NutraIngredients-USA. July 29, 2022. The results of a new randomized, double-blind study have linked supplementation with a proprietary hops extract with a reduction in osteoarthritic pain of the knee joint in a group of 33 men and women with an average age of 57 years.

Plant-based Meat 'Healthier and More Sustainable than Animal Products,' According to New Study. Medical Xpress. July 29, 2022. A new meta-review analyzing the results of 43 previously published studies has deduced that plant-based meat and dairy alternatives are a healthier and more sustainable nutrition strategy compared to animal-based sources of food.

Food as Medicine Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum; F. tataricum, Polygonaceae)

Contrary to its name, buckwheat is not a member of the cereal grain family (Poaceae) but rather a member of the knotweed family (Polygonaceae). Rich in protein, polyphenols, and minerals, buckwheat is considered a pseudocereal due to its physical and chemical similarities to wheat. The gluten-free “grain” has been used traditionally to treat hypertension and ulcers, and modern scientific research is investigating its potential use in type 2 diabetes and for cardiovascular and oral health.
