Cross-cultural Understanding of Local Herbal Knowledge and Chinese traditional Daodi Materia Medica
Online

Please note: the time zone for this event is Eastern Time.

Join us for a conversation with Ruyu Yao, PhD postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Medicinal Plant Development, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, China.

Dr. Yao has researched and written extensively on the historical use and production of goji (Lycium spp., Solanaceae) in different regions of China. We will explore the implications of this research for understanding the linkage of traditional herbal knowledge and current use and the relationship between medicinal plant quality and place.

How does this knowledge relate to diverse anthropogenic and natural factors? What impact do different types of sourcing and production have on quality? We will explore the implications of his research for the botanical industry and future sustainability of goji supplies.

Dr. Yao has a special expertise on ethnobotany, especially for the traditional knowledge of edible and/or medicinal plants. His research experiences include taxonomy, historical use, plant physiology, pharmacognosy and quality control of several medicinal plants, as well as regional ethnobotanic surveys.

His research interests lie in the conservation and development of traditional plant knowledge, the cross-cultural communication of traditional medical knowledge, and conservation of biodiversity especially for the useful plants.

He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Medicinal Plant Development, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, China.
