Webinar - Caring for the Whole Ecosystem 2: Regenerative Practices on Family-Owned Farms
Online

Please note: the time zone for this event is Eastern Time.

More people and companies are interested in sourcing high quality, certified organic botanicals from US grown farms. And family farmers who do grow botanicals do so because they see this as a way to change the world, a way to care for the soil, to produce healthy herbal medicine for their community, to provide good jobs, and to support biodiversity. In this webinar SHP Director, Ann Armbrecht, will speak with four farms growing medicinal plants in different regions of the US (North Carolina, Vermont, Oregon, and Hawaii) about their vision for farming, some specific practices they follow, and the unique challenges they face. We will talk about what is needed to shift towards a more equitable system, create more resilient models and what the responsibilities are of botanical companies and buyers of herbal products.

Speakers: Jordan Pratt, Farmer Director, Kauai Organic Farms; Cee Stanley, from Green Heffa Farms, Inc.; Mel and Jeff Carpenter from Zack Woods Herb Farm; and Jeff and Elise Higley from Oshala Farm.

Clarenda "Farmer Cee" Stanley is a fourth-generation farmer, originally from the Black Belt region of Alabama. She did not set out to follow an agrarian path but found herself returning to her roots as the CEO of Green Heffa Farms (GHF). Founded in 2018, Green Heffa Farms is a socially conscious natural health brand governed by its 4Es commitment to Ecological consciousness, Equity, Education, and Economic empowerment. Headquartered on nearly 15 acres in Liberty, NC, the farm creates its custom blended teas from its organically grown medicinal plants and herbs. Farmer Cee has been featured in more than 200 national and international publications, including Oprah O Magazine, and is a well-sought after speaker and thought leader.

Jordan Pratt, Farm Director of Kauai Organic Farms comes from a multi generation farming family that has farmed in the Central Valley of California since the 1850’s. I’ve farmed a variety of crops including, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, corn, wheat, blueberries, beef cattle, and now ginger, and turmeric.

Elise & Jeff Higley, are herb farmers in Southern Oregon, one of the meccas for herb farming in the US. They own and operate Oshala Farm, a mid scale organic family farm with over 70 varieties of medicinal herbs in production. Oshala Farm is the combination of Elise's passion for western herbalism and Jeff's passion for farming. Over the last 8 years they have learned through blood, sweat, tears and laughter what it takes to be a domestic herb farmer and how to keep farming financially sustainable while staying true to their earth centric values and organic practices.

Jeff and Melanie Carpenter founded Zack Woods Herb Farm in 1999. Jeff comes from generations of Vermont farmers and Melanie from an herbal family where she learned about herbs from stepmother & plant visionary Rosemary Gladstar. Together Jeff and Melanie have woven their backgrounds and love of plants into their work as farmers, agricultural consultants, authors, & educators. Dedicated to helping people grow local medicine and find success in medicinal herb farming, Jeff and Melanie teamed up in 2015 to co-author The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer, published by Chelsea Green and have been mentoring new farmers for the past 10 years.
