Sourcing Botanicals and Quality Control: A Conversation with Michael Heinrich and Anthony Booker
Online

Please note: the time zone for this event is Eastern Time.

In this webinar, SHP Director Ann Armbrecht will speak with renowned medicinal plant researchers Prof. Michael Heinrich, PhD, and Anthony Booker, PhD, about their research investigating the quality of botanical ingredients and herbal medicinal products along diverse value chains. The two guests will explore the relationship between how herbs are grown, handled, and processed and its impact on the quality of a selected number of finished herbal products. This conversation brings together the themes of sustainability and botanical ingredient authenticity as Heinrich and Booker discuss the importance of investing in value chains in order to ensure the quality of the finished herbal products. In particular they will discuss their research into the value chains of turmeric (Curcuma longa), rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) and St John’s wort products (Hypericum perforatum L.).

Michael Heinrich is a Professor of Ethnopharmacology and Medicinal Plant Research (Pharmacognosy) at the UCL School of Pharmacy, and was -- until 2018 -- the head of the research cluster / Centre ‘Biodiversity and Medicines’ at UCL. He currently serves as the joint chair of UCL’s Research Ethics Committee.

The group's research is based on a transdisciplinary perspective integrating approaches from the biomedical and social sciences with an overall aim of tackling the fast changing global health needs. Key areas of interest include the prevention and early stage management of diabetes / metabolic syndrome and cancer chemoprevention based on the use of traditional medicines as well as value chains of (herbal) medicinal products. The research integrates methodological approaches from ethnopharmacology, natural product research, public health research, and anthropology.

Currently, Prof. Heinrich is one of the two Vice-Presidents of the GA (Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research), one of the largest organizations in the field. He is Specialty Editor in Chief of Frontiers in Pharmacology (Ethnopharmacology) as well as an associate editor of the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, among a wide range of other roles.

Anthony Booker PhD, Senior Lecturer in Chinese herbal medicine and medicinal plant science at the University of Westminster and Research Associate at UCL. His PhD research thesis undertaken at UCL focused on the value chains of turmeric and how different value chains can affect both the livelihoods of the producing farmers and the quality of the finished products.

During two post-doctoral projects at UCL he investigated the quality of herbal medicinal products and their ingredients. His current research interests focus on the use of plant metabolomics in quality control, the quality of ingredients used in traditional Chinese medicine, and how mitochondrial health can be used a quality measure for herbal products.

He is a Member of The British Pharmacopoeia expert advisory group on Complementary and Herbal Medicines, a Member and past president of The Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine, a Member of The Royal Society of Chemistry and Fellow of The Linnean Society.
